To all OREIO members: I sent an email to my Member of Parliament asking for a status and here was his reply. Essentially nothing confirmed still. If anyone else finds out information, please let the group know. Thanks, Albert From: Sterling, Norm [mailto:norm_sterling@ontla.ola.org] Sent: Friday, April 21, 2006 4:14 PM To: 'Albert Boudreau' Subject: RE: Tenant Protection Act Dear Mr. Boudreau, In the Spring of 2004 the McGuinty government put out a consultation paper on reforming Ontario's rental system. They accepted comments on the paper until June 2004 but have not come out with any proposed legislation based on that process. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing Web site still promises new legislation and says to check back for updates but does not say when any legislation might be introduced. The original consultation paper and the continued promise of new legislation can be found at http://www.mah.gov.on.ca/userfiles/HTML/nts_1_16663_1.html. I am sorry that I don't have any more information for you than that. If we can assist you further with this or any other provincial issue, please don't hesitate to contact us again. Sincerely, Lesley Daw Legislative Assistant Norm Sterling, MPP Lanark-Carleton --------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Albert Boudreau [mailto:albert.boudreau@sympatico.ca] Sent: April 21, 2006 12:07 PM To: norm.sterling@pc.ola.org Subject: Tenant Protection Act Mr. Sterling, The current Tenant Protection Act states that landlords must pay 6% interest on rent deposits to the tenants. With bank interest rates being around 1%, this has been a sore point for a number of years. The McGuinty government was considering to cut that interest payment in half and was hoping to have this legislation in place October 2004. Where is this now? Where on the internet can I go to get information on what changes are being considered and updates on their progress? Thank you, Albert Boudreau |
