My brother-in-law has an interesting situation on the Quebec side of the
river that i'm not entirely sure is correct.

His landlady only wants to allow 1 year leases.  They're just finishing
3 years they've been there (3 leases), and now they are moving into a
house.  The house won't be available until October, so they'd be looking
at staying in their apartment for ~3 months longer than the end of the
current lease.

The landlord has said that they can't do that.  They would need to sign
another 12 month lease, and then find someone else to move in (ie, they
would be responsible).

This seems rather fishy to me - I am used to people automatically
falling down to month-to-month after they finish a 1 year lease, but
I've only dealt with the Ontario side.

Any insights?  I realize this is an informal inquiry, and when/if an
actual situation arises proper legal advice will be looked into.
