Most landlords want to see income history, credit scores, and all the usual due diligence items prior to accepting a tenant into their property. There is a small but high quality tenant base consisting of refugees who have fled areas in the world where their life and safety was in danger. They don't have the requisite paperwork that most landlords are looking for. Many have spent months in Canada in shelters under incredibly difficult conditions. Many who have sought asylum in Canada are highly educated and were part of the fabric of the community in the home country. The Canadian government gives them a monthly allowance for both housing and living expenses. These people are also allowed to work in Canada while their refugee claim is being processed.

The purpose of this message is to reach out to OREIO members who would be open to considering renting to a refugee family. My wife works directly with many in the refugee community and they can make excellent tenants while giving you the opportunity to do make a meaningful contribution to a family who could really use a break.

Their rent affordability is mid-market (often around $1,300 per month). If you own a property, or know of one that could be a good fit, please reach out to me at vp@oreio.org.
